Sen. John Fetterman mocked House Republicans during an interview Tuesday after news broke that Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) had called for a former impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden over allegations he took bribes and benefitted from other shady business deals with foreign nationals involving his son, Hunter Biden.

“Oh my god, really?” Fetterman said, raising his hands to the side of his head after an NBC News journalist asked him to respond to the news.

“Oh my gosh, you know, oh, it’s devastating,” Fetterman noted further before breaking out in laughter.

“Ooo, don’t do it. Please don’t do it! Oh, no! Oh, no,” he added before he walked off.

Later, on the X platform, the Pennsylvania Democrat continued the mocking with a post that included the video clip of him interacting with the reporter. He added a skull emoji and wrote, “oooOoooooOooo.”

As Republicans ramped up talk of impeaching Biden last week, Fetterman also mocked the discussions on X. Fetterman posted, “Go ahead. Do it, I dare you,” adding, “It would just be like a big circle jerk on the fringe right.”

McCarthy, a California Republican, has faced intense pressure to launch the impeachment inquiry from hard-right members of the GOP, some of whom have threatened to oust him amid disagreements over the budget. The move gives the GOP more muscle to scrutinize the White House but also carries risks for Republicans, with some members expressing doubts about the wisdom of such a tack and whether it could bring blowback at the ballot box absent concrete evidence of wrongdoing by the president.

On Tuesday, McCarthy said House committees “have uncovered serious and credible allegations into President Biden’s conduct. Taken together, these allegations paint a picture of a culture of corruption.”

In a brief statement, he said Republicans “are committed to getting the answers for the American public.”

Earlier, McCarthy said that no impeachment inquiry would move forward without a vote in the House, but he changed his mind on Tuesday. When asked about it by a reporter, he responded: “Nancy Pelosi has changed the rules of the House. We’re just following through.”

When she was Speaker, she unilaterally declared that an impeachment inquiry into then-President Donald Trump would be launched, though later she ordered a vote on the matter, and it passed largely along party lines.

When pressed as to whether he thinks Biden has committed impeachable offenses, McCarthy replied: “All I said is an impeachment inquiry allows us to get answers.”

The WSJ noted further: “Labeling a probe of the president as an impeachment inquiry is seen as giving the House more power as it conducts investigations. A 2019 report by the Congressional Research Service said such an investigation could help Congress in several ways, including by improving the likelihood that a court would authorize access to grand jury materials and by boosting the chances of overcoming assertions such as executive privilege.”

Investigators for the GOP-controlled House said that the committees plan to use powers granted by the formal inquiry to subpoena bank records for Joe and Hunter Biden.

“And if we can connect the dots and show the American people where the bribery allegations stand, what the money laundering says, vis-a-vis the bank records, that is a way to do that,” Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.), told CNN on Monday regarding the impeachment inquiry.

“If you could see what I have seen, and we can’t share the [suspicious bank activity] reports because that would be against the law, so we have to prove it via other means, the bank records, and other things,” she added.

“Everyone should know what actually happened, what kind of businesses were involved, how Joe Biden was involved, what kind of money that was involved in these schemes is astounding,” she added. “You would blush if you knew, if you’d seen what I’ve seen.”
